Static vs Dynamic QR Code: How to Choose
Published · Updated
Before choosing, one clarification: the static/dynamic distinction is not about visual quality or advanced features. It is about who controls the redirect, and therefore who can cut your access.
What each type actually encodes
A static QR encodes your content directly into the pixels: your website URL, Wi-Fi credentials, your vCard. The phone reads and acts. Zero middleman.
A dynamic QR encodes the URL of a third-party server (qrservice.com/r/XXXX). That
server forwards to your real destination. This implies infrastructure that must stay online,
and a billing relationship somewhere.
Decision table
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Fixed link (menu, website, portfolio, product page) | Static: free, permanent |
| Wi-Fi credentials or vCard | Static: encoded directly, no server required |
| Event invitation, wedding QR | Static: the URL does not change after printing |
| Flyers printed in large quantities | Static: if the URL changes, you reprint anyway |
| Campaign with frequently changing URL | Dynamic with a known upfront price |
| Scan tracking by location, time, device | Dynamic when its statistics meet your needs; visits do not all prove a scan |
| Product packaging with a long shelf life | Static: a lapsing subscription means dead QRs on products already sold |
When dynamic is genuinely worth it
A dynamic QR makes sense in exactly two cases:
- You change the destination URL often (marketing campaign, seasonal link, landing page A/B test) and cannot or do not want to reprint.
- You need detailed analytics (scan counts, geographic breakdown, device type) to measure a campaign.
In every other case, static is not just sufficient but preferable: no expiration risk, no critical dependency on a third-party, no premium to pay.
The trap to avoid
Some generators silently create a dynamic QR even for a plain static use case. After a trial period, the redirect stops. To check what you have: scan and look at the initial URL. If it is your domain, you are on static. If it is an unfamiliar domain, you depend on a third party.
If you do choose dynamic, pick a service whose annual price is publicly listed before you sign up, not discovered at renewal time.
Availability on QR Permanent
This generator is static and free. Dynamic QR codes are not available yet. A destination website can have its own analytics even with a static QR; those visits do not necessarily prove a QR scan.
